Miscellaneous thoughts and ramblings

I know this means I'll probably have to read a book, but I was just wondering about the social/historical/psychological reasons why urban areas are, at least currently, so liberal. Also, why at this particular point in time does social conservatism for the most part go hand-in-hand with a strong commitment to defense in foreign policy?

For the record, I don't really care enough to actually read no books.
The Dems abandonment of defense is a post-Vietnam phenomenon. JFK campaigned on our missle gap versus the Soviets and wanted to increase military spending. Johnson increased our commitment to the Vietnam war. Scoop Jackson is the classic pro-defense liberal. Then in the late 60s the left took over the party and for the rest of the Cold War they were for nuclear testing bans, a reduction in military spending, and warm-and-fuzzy treaties with the Soviets. Thank God for Reagan.
