Lunatic Fringe
I was driving home yesterday listening to Jack FM when Lunatic Fringe by Red Rider came on. I hadn't heard it in years. I parked on my driveway and waited for it to finish. The song really rocks. It occurred to me that it's not a bad song for the war against Islamofascism. When I sat down to read the lyrics, I thought it was even better. The only caveat is that Islamists are not mentally ill; they're evil. So "lunatic" doesn't really apply, except as an insult. And though they are on the fringe of Western Civilization, I no longer believe they represent a fringe of Islam.

Lunatic Fringe
I know you're out there
You're in hiding
And you hold your meetings
We can hear you coming
We know what you're after
We're wise to you this time
We won't let you kill the laughter

Lunatic Fringe
In the twilight's last gleaming
This is open season
But you won't get too far
We know you've got to blame someone
For your own confusion
But we're on guard this time
Against your final solution

We can hear you coming
No you're not going to win this time
We can hear the footsteps
Way out along the walkway
Lunatic Fringe
We know you're out there
But in these new dark ages
There will still be light

An eye for an eye
Well, before you go under
Can you feel the resistance
Can you feel the...thunder

Yup, that about sums it up!

Another one that sounds as though it was written about the 'religion of peace' is a tune by Stevie Wonder called 'Saturn' (from his SOngs in the Key of Life album:

We have come here many times before
to find your strategy to peace is war,
killing helpless men, women and children
that don't even know what they're dying for.
We can't trust you when you take a stand
with a gun and bible in your hand
and the cold expression on your face,
saying "give us what we want or we'll destroy"

Substitute the word 'Koran' for the word 'Bible' and it is spot on!

I wonder if you suggested to either of these artists that their songs could apply to Islam if they'd shrink away in horror at the suggestion.

We seem to be going out of our way NOT to state the obvious about islam. For every denouncement of terror as evil, we have to have a praise of Islam as a religion of peace.

No wonder they're winning.

David: What was that song written about? When? Was it anti Vietnam? It sounds very anti war, whereas "Lunatic Fringe" points at the bad guys and says "We're ready for you this time".

Psychotoddler: Of course. Christians are the only group that it's OK to attack these days. I don't know who Tom Cochrane had in mind, but I'll give his favorite charity a check if he wrote this thinking of radical Islam.

It was writtenin the mid 70s and it isn't clear who it is talking about.

Sorry.

David: 'saright.

Let's explore this idea that mainstream Islamists are evil. Tis a bold statement. I want to make sure I am understanding you.

Are you saying that Islam is an evil religion or that most practioners of this otherwise peaceful religion are evil? On what do you base your (cuckoo?) opinion?

Oven: We may not be understanding some of the words. Islamist means fundamentalist Muslim, one who believes that all of life (government, law, education, etc…) should be derived from Islamic law. I never said, nor do I believe that all (or even most) Muslims are evil.

Am I making any sense?

We are understanding the words now. It makes more sense than before.
