Top 10 Favorite Movies
This can be a little annoying, actually, but Jonathan Last at Galley Slaves has posted his Top 10 Movies and asked for comments. Here's what I posted over there:

Rushmore
The Sound of Music
History of the World, Part I
Amadeus
Terminator
They Live (best sci-fi ever)
The Quarrel
Schindler's List
The Untouchables
Annie Hall
The Sixth Sense
Boyz in da Hood
Raging Bull
Pulp Fiction
Back to the Future

Okay, that's 15. So sue me.
Comments:
Okay Ralphie...here's is my assessment of your assessment: First of all, are you a guy? You are the first guy to ever admit he likes the Sound of Music. The rest of your choices, except for the ones I haven't seen (which we really don't need to go in to) are good choices.

Haven't seen "They Live" and I thought I knew my sci-fi. What's up with that? Ball-and-chain: add it to our Blockbusters list, please. Amadeus, Annie Hall, and Schindler's List are great. Terminator, 6th Sense (freaked me out for a week), Back to the Future, and Pulp Fiction are very good but I don't think belong in a top tier. I need to see the Quarrel.

My partial list would include:

Brazil (best sci-fi ever, or maybe fantasy)
Star Wars (IV, A New Hope)
Crimes and Misdemeanors
Fletch
Blazing Saddles

What, you've got Sound of Music, but no Fiddler on the Roof? What's wrong with you, Ralphie? Those movies WERE my childhood!
No foreign films? Amelie, perhaps?
Otherwise, it's a pretty good list...considering I haven't seen all those mentioned.

Oh, and also 2001 (the actual best sci-fi ever).

Hey, plenty of guys like musical movies! I don't know why Americans are so hung up on that!

Ralphie,

The Sound of Music? The Sound of Music? Oy vey. Bean we need to run a complete workup on him stat. He needs a heavy does of testosterone, a night of drunken debauchery and something else, a giftcard to Home Depot maybe.

Ralphie,

Please in the name of all that is good and holy don't make us force you to watch Deliverance a thousand times, recant, recant before the union guys get to you.

And what's the top ten based on? Top ten best made? Top ten that you like because when you saw them you were in a certain mood and it just fit...

This list is, however, very eclectic!

Birdwoman - yeah, it is weird putting together a top 10 - or top 15 - list. It's arbitrary in a way. There are suggestions here and elsewhere that could easily have made the list. What can I tell you?

Musical haters: Yes, I am a man. A proud, homosexual, man. But I kid! Look, the Sound of Music was on the other night and I'm sorry, it is just a very well made film with a great story.

Pearl: Sorry, but Fiddler is well-nigh unwatchable. There. I said it.

Jack: Deliverance. Um, yeah, that's a great candidate for reinforcing heterosexuality (have you even seen it?)...

They Live - or, more accurately, "John Carpernter's They Live" - features Rowdy Roddy Piper as a loner who must defeat the aliens who have already taken over the earth, secretly! It features one of the best unnecessary lines ever: "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I'm all out of bubble gum."

Not a big fan of Annie Hall. To me, the least funny movie Woody Allen ever made. And it beat out Star Wars for Best Picture, which only makes sense if you're a Hollywood type.

I like:
Star Wars
Lord of the Rings
Casablanca
Godfather I and II
Spiderman 2
Airplane
Caddyshack

You know, IMDB has a list of the 250 most popular moview that you might find interesting. The link is here.

Raplhie,

I have seen Deliverance a few times. But the Sound of Music is like nails on a chalkboard.

How would you know, Jack? You admitted to me that you've never actually watched The Sound of Music.

You have good taste, Ralphie. The Sound of Music is my all-time favorite movie. Ever. And it is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. I don't think I've ever actually bought a movie. But if I don't get this one for Chanukah, I am buying it!!

The hills are alive, Stacey. The hills are alive.

Ralphie,

That is the problem, there are evil things in them thar hills.

BTW, the Shmata Queen had a whole post devoted to the Von Shtupid clan.

I must clarify...I love Sound of Music...in fact I love musicals...period. It's just that you are the first guy to ever admit liking Sound of music (that I know of)

They live is a fun film, but about halfway through, when Keith David and Piper are busy pounding each other into the ground for about 10 minutes, I could feel brain cells dying.

What, no Alien?

2001 is a seminal Sci-fi film, but you have to be very hard core to appreciate it. My kids make me turn it off.

PT- that's one of the best parts of the movie! Longest fistfight scene ever!

The Sound of Music. I'm deeply, deeply worried about this choice. I prescribe at least five viewings of "The Seven Samurai." That might do the trick. If not, try an equal number screnings of "The Wild Bunch." If you still insist on TSOM. Well, despair would not be inappropriate.

Robert, if you write a musical, I will switch allegiances immediately.

Welcome to the Coffeehouse!
