Can't Get There From Here
Google, yet again, has done something very cool -- Google maps. Right click on the Google logo and open the link in a new window.

At the heart of this is a mapping and directions-generating engine like in lots of other web-based directions sites, but here's the twist. Towards the top right of the window, click on the "satellite" link. That's right; you can view the maps as traditional labeled maps or as satellite pictures. Use the controls on the left to zoom in and out. To pan you can just drag the image.

Now search for something. Put your home address in the search window up top. Zoom way in. You might be able to see your house. You'll certainly be able to see your block.

Here's The Washington Monument. (Again, zoom in all the way.)

Another cool thing is you can do proximity searches. Once you're looking at something, any further searches start at that location. So if you're visiting the Washington Monument and thinking "where's the nearest Socialist Party headquarters?" just type "socialist party" in the search box and it turns out you're pretty close.

Here's The Hollywood Sign, and the closest falafel stands to it.

And, of course, like other map engines, you can use it to get directions. If, for example, Torontopearl wanted to visit me, here are directions from Toronto to Los Angeles. Obviously, with specific addresses, you can get more specific directions.
Hat tip Redsugar.
Comments:
Why would I want to visit *you*? If I'm to visit CALIFORNIA, I've heard Monterey Bay is really nice especially in June. (BTW, where IS Monterey Bay?)

BTW, being the editor that I am, I'm not TorotoPearl, but ToroNtoPearl. Sorry to have to point out the error of your ways...you don't get the gold star this time for spelling.

One more item to point out, Doctor Bean. Although I'd love to take the credit, you've linked Redsugar to my blog. Yay, more viewers for me, but none for Redsugar. Maybe you want to correct that little item, too.

Wow, this is so cool... I actually found my condo building... something that most people can't find even when they are right there!

Torontopearl: Thank you for reading so closely. That's what I get for posting late at night. I just fixed both mistakes.

If you're looking for Monterey Bay, California, just type it in the search bar at Google Maps. It's in Northern California.

Irina: Neat, huh?

I can see my house from here!

Doctor Bean, it really is a great site to link to!

I did link onto the driving directions you provided for Toronto - Los Angeles. Funny where it chooses to start, somewhere uptown. I don't know the first named street but I sure know the others... However I live quite a bit north of that point of origin,in the suburbs, so would definitely have to make modifications.

How about if GoogleMaps just gives me the directions from my house to the airport and I'll take it from there...?

Do you think GoogleMaps might also tell Dorothy how to get to Oz...or tell Alice how to get to the moon (for you youngsters out there, that's a reference to The Honeymooners, starring the late, great Jackie Gleason)or tell Dionne Warwick the "...Way to San Jose"?

torontopearl: just put in specific addresses where you want to start and where you want to end up and it'll come up with the route.

do you people in california not work? you manage to be online a lot. i feel this is "instant messaging", not just a comments section.

i know my excuse -- easy accessibility to internet while i am working. (you know, i have to do "fact checking" in my job) what's yours?

actually i was teasing you with my previous response; i do understand how the googlemaps works, just still found it odd where it chose to start my [supposed] journey to l.a. !

Bean posts by blackberry, which he carries with him when examining patients. When they ask what he's doing, he tells them it's a tri-corder.
