Really Not Necessary
I just saw a very nice guy in his 50s whom I’ve been taking care of for about six years. I just told him he has diabetes and spent about an hour examining him and telling him what he and I are going to do about it. He couldn’t stop thanking me. At the end of the visit he gave me a bear hug and a kiss on the cheek!

I love my job.
Comments:
Its nice to get a little satisfaction and gratitude. Enjoy.

Imagine if you told him he had shingles. He might have kissed you on the mouth.

Maybe next time...

: ) Keep up the good work!

When I read your post, it was tough for me to get beyond "just spent an hour examining him"! That in itself is worthy of a bear hug and kiss, forget about the diagnosis and treatment. What a rarity to have an hour-long medical examination. Usually you have an appt. for a certain time, get there just a bit early "just in case" the doctor can see you earlier, you wait and you wait in the waiting room 'cause actually the doctor has overbooked his appointments, your blood pressure rises 'cause you've become frustrated and uptight while waiting...and when the doctor finally sees you an hour after your scheduled appointment, he apologizes and then examines you for ten to fifteen minutes.
In reality, it pays to stay healthy!
How are you doing with your shingles, by the way? Have you had a reason to kiss and hug your doctor for treating you correctly?

Irina: Thanks. How are you holding up?

Torontopearl: I'm feeling ~ 95% better. Acyclovir and time are my friends. The difference in the standard of care you're noticing is at least partially due to the very different incentives that apply to a private practice doctor in the US and to a Canadian doctor.

Dilbert has asserted in his blog in the past that healthcare is not something people should get rich from. I'm certainly very far from getting rich, but I'm not ashamed to say that needing to feed and educate my kids (within the bounds of excellent medicine and scrupulous ethics) is a potent motivator. Perhaps Dilbert and Torontopearl should compare notes.

I'm all right! I'm so busy that I don't have time to be sad or worried about other things! War may or may not be the answer to every problem, but *work* definitely is! ; )

I love caring doctors. Your comments on Psycho Toddler's blog are funny, I have to come in and visit yours. ;)

Irina: Glad you're busy.

By the way. Yuck! You finally got a picture and it's a dung beetle. Funny, yet gross.

Wickwire: Welcome. I hate it when I raise expectations. I'll try to put on my funny just for you!

That's exactly why I put that picture up.
