Frickin' Laser Beams
Anyone following this laser beam story? Bizarre.
What I find really odd is this line: "It is against federal law to intentionally shine a laser beam at a commercial airline flight."
How did this become law? Sounds like a fairly obscure occurence, no?

It is very weird.
I wonder if the authorities are worried that someone would illuminate a plane with a laser, not to blind the pilot, but to target the plan with a laser-guided weapon. I have no clue if there are surface-to-air laser guided weapons. The main drawback would be that you would need to keep the laser pointed at a plane that's moving pretty quickly.
If it's just being used to blind the pilots, it seems like an awfully unreliable way to cause trouble, though I guess if the chances of gettin caught is very low, you could keep trying many times.
