Sudoku
A Japanese logic puzzle is sweeping the globe. It is called sudoku, a combination of the Japanese words for number and single.

I first learned of it in the May 21st Economist. The "easy" puzzle shown below is taken from that magazine.

Fill in the blanks so that every row, column, and block (separated by white space) contains 1 to 9.

- - - - 1 - - - -
3 - 1 4 - - 8 6 -
9 - - 5 - - 2 - -

7 - - 1 6 - - - -
- 2 - 8 - 5 - 1 -
- - - - 9 7 - - 4

- - 3 - - 4 - - 6
- 4 8 - - 6 9 - 7
- - - - 8 - - - -
Comments:
This might be the coolest thing I've ever seen in my whole life. I've canceled all my patients tomorrow so I can work on it. Godby, take over blogging.

I hate you.

I have given up work today until I figure this thing out.

Ok, now I REALLY hate you.

I've created an Excel spreadsheet to try and fugure this out.

The only number I know for sure is putting a 1 in the 8th row, first column. Other than that, I'm still doing trial and error.

Um, that looks like a puzzle.
Godby and I will be in the corner finishing our coffee and muffins while you geeks work this out.

Ok I finally figured it out.

4 5 2 6 1 8 3 7 9
3 7 1 4 2 9 8 6 5
9 8 6 5 7 3 2 4 1

7 3 4 1 6 2 5 9 8
6 2 9 8 4 5 7 1 3
8 1 5 3 9 7 6 2 4

2 9 3 7 5 4 1 8 6
1 4 8 2 3 6 9 5 7
5 6 7 9 8 1 4 3 2

The key to this is breaking it up to single "cell", 3 row pieces and that's how you can logic it all out.

[Putting both index fingers in ears.]

LA LA LA. I CAN'T HEAR YOU. I'M STILL WORKING ON IT. I'M NOT SEEING YOUR SOLUTION.

By the way, is it a coincidence that sudoku is an acronym for u do suk?

OK Bean, apparently we need to work on word puzzles next. You mean anagram. An acronym is a word where all the letters stand for something, like scuba or laser.

Fine work, hagrin.

Thanks.

I highly suggest looking at a page that has tips on how to solve these things if you have never tackled one before.

Oh, right. Anagram is what I meant.

OK. I got this:

452 618 379
371 429 865
986 573 241

734 162 598
629 845 713
815 397 624

293 754 186
148 236 957
567 981 432

Comparing to what hagrin got...
Yipee I did it!

Dude, that was hard. I also used an excel spreadsheet.
